I have been reminded this week that change can be scary, and how do we embrace an uncertain future? How do we face the fire and decide to walk through it? We cannot turn away from the events that cause uncertainty in life, so we must embrace them. Anxiety, the illness of our time, comes primarily from our inability to dwell in the present moment, forever regretting past decisions and fearing the future. Mindfulness is the practice of accepting the present moment, because living in the present moment gives us the ability to tolerate positive and negative experiences with equanimity, as opposed to rushing towards pleasure and away from the unpleasant. Mindful meditation is the kind antidote to the future-fearing world in which we live.
